The Dadin Kowa Hydroelectric Power Plant stands as one of Nigeria’s most significant privately operated renewable energy assets. Located in Gombe State and built on the foundation of the historic Dadin Kowa Dam, the facility represents Mabon Limited’s long-term commitment to clean power, infrastructure investment, and energy security.
Dadin Kowa Hydroelectric Power Plant
Overview
In 2005 Mabon Limited undertook a multi-million dollar programme to develop the site into a fully operational hydropower facility.
The plant was brought online with an installed capacity of 40MW, capable of contributing up to 240,000 MWh to the national grid annually. In 2021, the concession was extended, a testament to Mabon’s operational track record and the government’s confidence in its continued stewardship of the asset.
Output and performance
Since becoming operational, the plant has generated over 750 million kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Generation output has grown year on year, reflecting both improved operational efficiency and ongoing investment in plant performance. During peak conditions, the facility operates at full capacity; during the dry season, output is managed in line with water availability, typically ranging between 13 and 14MW. Mabon’s operations and maintenance partnership with PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation (HDEC) ensures the plant is maintained to international standards, with a focus on reliability, safety, and long-term asset integrity.
The future
Mabon is not standing still. Plans are in place to develop a 200MW solar power facility approximately 1.5km from the existing hydropower station, integrating seamlessly with the current infrastructure via a new 33/132kV step-up station
The solar project will be delivered in two phases, 40MW initially, followed by a further 160MW and will significantly increase the site’s total renewable generation footprint. Together, the hydro and solar assets will position Dadin Kowa as one of Nigeria’s most capable and diversified clean energy sites.
