Umar is an experienced energy and sustainability professional with over a decade of progressive
leadership experience in Nigeria’s energy sector. His expertise spans power generation operations,
distributed energy resources, regulatory compliance, stakeholder engagement, corporate strategy, ESG
integration, and enterprise risk governance. He is widely recognised for translating complex technical
and regulatory requirements into practical, performance-driven outcomes that strengthen operational
resilience and financial sustainability.
Before joining Mabon Limited, Umar spent several years at Kano Electricity Distribution Company
(KEDCO), where he served in senior leadership roles, including Member of the Executive
Management Committee and Head of Health, Safety and Environment. During this period, he played
a pivotal role in corporate strategy formulation, regulatory engagement, and operational
transformation initiatives within a highly regulated utility environment.
At KEDCO, Umar served as the focal person for the World Bank–supported Distribution Sector
Recovery Program (DISREP) and was instrumental in securing the company’s eligibility. He also led
the development of the utility’s Distributed Energy Resources strategy in collaboration with
international partners (Rocky Mountain Institute) resulting in improved power reliability, regulatory
standing, and operational efficiency.
Since joining Mabon Limited, Umar has been central to strengthening regulatory compliance,
improving power generation performance, enhancing revenue assurance, and embedding ESG
principles across the Group. His oversite covers hydropower operations, renewable energy expansion,
geophysical data sales, real estate asset management, Budget performance, workforce development,
and enterprise risk management. He also leads strategic engagement with regulators, investors,
development partners, and key industry stakeholders.
Umar holds a First Class MSc in Petroleum and Environmental Technology and professional
certifications in Project Management, Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) and ISO 45001. His
strong technical foundation, combined with a governance-focused mindset, underpins his approach
to building resilient, compliant, and high-performing energy businesses.
He is known for disciplined execution, strategic clarity, and the ability to lead complex, multi-
stakeholder operations in highly regulated environments. Umar remains committed to advancing
Nigeria’s energy transition, strengthening infrastructure resilience, and delivering sustainable long-
term value for shareholders, partners, and host communities.
